Israel’s Defense Ministry reported Thursday that it had completed successful trials of a rail-mounted robotic system intended to enhance security at prisons, border checkpoints, and military bases.
The system, which moves along a fixed track, was tested at Ela Prison in Beersheba in cooperation with the Israel Prison Service and private security firms.
Unlike drones or wheeled robots, the rail-mounted design allows continuous movement along fences or walls. Inductive charging built into the rail provides uninterrupted power, enabling the robot to operate around the clock with minimal maintenance.
Brig. Gen. Yehuda Al-Makiys, head of the Defense Intelligence Agency’s research and development unit, told The Jerusalem Post that the robot is a “semi-autonomous system expected to work for weeks and months continuously,” adding that its reliability will help make facilities and borders more secure.
During testing, the robot demonstrated a range of capabilities, including detecting people and vehicles, tracking targets, issuing early warnings, and conducting surveillance in poor visibility.
It can also be equipped with tools that allow for a remote response to security incidents. Defense officials stressed that the system will complement, not replace, other security technologies.
Yaron Shein, head of R&D at the National Security Ministry, described the project as “a technological leap forward,” highlighting its advanced sensing capabilities and ability to operate continuously.
“Dealing with security threats requires innovation, creativity, and rapid response—and the new robot is an excellent example,” he said.
The Israel Prison Service described the pilot as a milestone in its modernization efforts. Gunder Eran Peyer, commander of the IPS Southern District, said the project reflects a vision of combining advanced technology with human expertise. “The track robot… strengthens security, creates warning capabilities, and increases deterrence inside and outside of prison facilities,” he explained.
The Defense Ministry said the system was conceived following operational lessons from the war with Hamas and will gradually be deployed to sensitive sites across Israel, including border areas and military installations. Officials described the initiative as a breakthrough in efforts to enhance protection against both external and internal threats.
