A story of renewal emerged in northern Israel, where two families touched by grief announced their engagement.
Hadas Loewenstern, widow of Rabbi Elisha Loewenstern, who was killed during a rescue mission in Gaza on December 13, 2023, has become engaged to Hod Reichert, whose wife, Hagit, died last year following complications during childbirth.
Both are residents of the northern city of Harish, which has carried its own burdens during the Iron Swords War.
Rabbi Loewenstern, 38, an American-Israeli reservist, was struck by an anti-tank missile while aiding wounded soldiers. He left behind Hadas and their six children, the youngest only 11 months old. Hadas drew widespread attention after his death with a video tribute declaring: “We plan on living such a wonderful life that the bad guys will never merit to live.”
In the months that followed, she spoke often about strength and faith.
“I understand that I don’t understand. I understand that God has His own plan. And this is my deal with Him: You give me the strength, and I will try to make the entire Jewish world love You more, believe in You more. And this is what keeps me alive,” she told Aish.com.
For two families marked by loss, the engagement represents not the erasure of sorrow but the choice to build a future together.
