As the world’s oceans face threats, an Israeli startup may have the solution. CarbonBlue, founded in 2022 by Dr. Dan Deviri and Iddo Tsur, has unveiled “Midway”—a carbon removal project designed to demonstrate that industry can not only reduce its environmental footprint, but also actively contribute to reversing climate change.
The Midway Project integrates carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology with a desalination plant—a first-of-its-kind approach. The project marks a critical milestone in CarbonBlue’s journey toward large-scale industrial applications.
“Our process essentially takes natural water that is saturated with CO₂ and, with the assistance of green lime, it transforms the CO₂ into calcium carbonate solid particles, which can then easily be separated from the water,” explained a company representative on the company’s website. “The decarbonized water returns to its origin with the capacity to reabsorb CO₂ from the atmosphere.”
This process also helps heal the world’s oceans by reducing acidification caused by excess carbon dioxide. By pulling CO₂ from seawater, the technology not only protects marine life but enables the oceans to absorb more carbon from the atmosphere, acting as a powerful climate regulator.
CarbonBlue’s technology also enhances desalination. “It will allow us to increase the recovery rate, and that will enable us to produce more drinking water out of each cubic meter of raw water,” said one of the plant’s engineers.
Deviri and Tsur’s vision stems from the urgent global need to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 50 billion tons. “Midway shows our vision can become a reality. Humanity’s massive industry can become carbon negative,” said one team member.
With support from Israeli scientists and engineers, CarbonBlue is proving that even small-scale projects can lead to significant environmental shifts.
