Two men were wounded in a stabbing attack in the predominantly Jewish neighborhood of Golders Green in north London on Wednesday, in what officials and community groups described as an antisemitic incident.

Police said officers were called at around 11:16 a.m. following reports of multiple stabbings on Highfield Avenue. Local and armed officers, along with the London Ambulance Service, responded to the scene.

According to the Metropolitan Police, a 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after being subdued with a Taser. The suspect also attempted to stab police officers before his arrest. No officers were injured.

The two victims, in their 70s and 30s, were treated at the scene for stab wounds and taken to the hospital. Both were reported to be in stable condition.

The ultra-Orthodox neighborhood watch group Shomrim said the attacker ran along Golders Green Road armed with a knife, attempting to stab Jewish pedestrians near a synagogue.

“One male was seen running along Golders Green Road armed with a knife and attempting to stab Jewish members of the public,” the group said, adding that its volunteers intervened and detained the suspect before handing him over to police.

Jewish emergency response organization Hatzola treated the victims at the scene.

Counter Terrorism Policing has taken the lead in the investigation, working alongside the Metropolitan Police to determine the full circumstances of the attack and whether it is linked to terrorism.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident, calling it “deeply concerning” and later describing it as an “utterly appalling” antisemitic attack.

“Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain,” Starmer said, thanking Shomrim, Hatzola, and police for their swift response and vowing that those responsible would be brought to justice.

Conservative MP and Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp criticized the government’s handling of antisemitism, arguing that stronger action is needed to protect Jewish communities.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the suspect’s background and any potential motives.
