“Our equation is that if there are drones, we bomb the Dahiyeh. The Americans are preventing this, and they are our partners,” Katz said.

Israel appeared poised for a major escalation against Hezbollah earlier this week, with mounting indications Monday night that strikes deep inside Beirut, including in the Dahiyeh stronghold, were increasingly likely.
The tensions intensified after Netanyahu signaled Israel was entering a more aggressive phase of the campaign against Hezbollah.
“We are not easing off the gas. On the contrary, I have instructed [officials] to press harder,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. “We will increase the blows and increase the intensity. We will hit them hard.”
He also addressed Hezbollah’s continued drone attacks on northern Israel, saying, “They are firing drones at us. We have a special team working on this, and we will solve that as well.”
At the same time, Israel’s Home Front Command tightened civilian restrictions across parts of northern Israel, reducing gathering limits and maintaining partial activity in frontline communities as fears of escalation mounted.
Shlomi Regional Council head Gabi Na’aman said local leaders were informed by Northern Command that the situation was “escalating day by day” and would likely intensify further overnight and in the coming days.
But despite the rhetoric, the night passed quietly in the Lebanese capital as new details pointed to intense American pressure aimed at preventing a wider regional escalation.
According to a report by Israel’s Channel 12 News, Israel informed the United States two days ago of its intention to expand operations in Lebanon, including activity beyond the Yellow Line.
The update was reportedly passed to the White House through U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee rather than directly from Netanyahu to President Donald Trump.
The American message, according to the report, was unequivocal: Do not strike buildings in Beirut.
U.S. officials reportedly fear major strikes in Beirut could destabilize broader regional diplomacy, particularly the ongoing negotiations with Iran, as well as U.S.-mediated talks between Israel and Lebanon taking place in Washington.
Inside Israel’s security Cabinet Tuesday night, ministers debated how aggressively to respond to Hezbollah drone attacks while avoiding a rupture with Washington.
According to a report by Ynet, Netanyahu argued during the discussion that Israel was still free to act in Beirut.
“We are not limited from operating in Beirut. We operated there recently,” Netanyahu reportedly said.
Defense Minister Israel Katz reportedly told ministers that Israel’s established response to Hezbollah drone attacks had traditionally been strikes in Beirut’s Dahiyeh district.
“Our equation is that if there are drones, we bomb the Dahiyeh. The Americans are preventing this, and they are our partners,” Katz said, according to Ynet.
Adding to the sensitivity, an Iranian source told Al Jazeera Monday night that Tehran had warned Washington any Israeli strike in Beirut would severely damage efforts to reach an agreement aimed at ending the war.
Ultimately, no strikes were reported in Beirut. Instead, the IDF focused its firepower on southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, announcing Tuesday that Israeli forces had carried out a broad wave of strikes on more than 100 Hezbollah targets, including weapons depots, command centers, observation posts, and infrastructure used to plan attacks against Israeli forces and civilians.
The developments underscore the increasingly delicate balancing act facing Israel as it seeks to intensify pressure on Hezbollah without jeopardizing sensitive negotiations involving Iran, Lebanon, and the broader regional diplomacy unfolding behind the scenes.
