President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday directing the U.S. government to consider designating certain chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood abroad as foreign terrorist organizations.
The order instructs Cabinet members to begin the formal designation process, which could place the groups on the U.S. terrorist list and trigger sanctions.
The executive order describes the Muslim Brotherhood as “a transnational network with chapters across the Middle East and beyond” and notes that its chapters in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt “engage in or facilitate and support violence and destabilization campaigns that harm their own regions, United States citizens, and United States interests.”
Regarding the October 7, 2023, attack in Israel, the order states: “In the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, attack in Israel, the military wing of the Lebanese chapter of the Muslim Brotherhood joined Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian factions to launch multiple rocket attacks against both civilian and military targets within Israel.”
The designation process begins a 30-day review by the State and Treasury departments. If approved, measures could freeze assets, restrict travel, and criminalize support for affiliated entities. Steps against the chapters are expected within 45 days of completing the review.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the renewed U.S. initiative, calling Trump’s decision “an important step toward confronting a movement that has destabilized the Middle East for decades.” He added, “Israel has already outlawed parts of the organization, and we are working to complete that process soon.”
