A groundbreaking rabbinical decision is bringing hope and inclusion to those who have lost limbs — especially soldiers and terror victims injured during the ongoing Iron Swords war.

In the latest edition of Tehumin, a respected journal on Jewish law and technology, Rabbi Yaakov Ariel issued a precedent-setting halachic ruling: individuals with advanced bionic prosthetic limbs may fully participate in sacred commandments such as donning tefillin (phylacteries), waving the Four Species during Sukkot, and delivering the Priestly Blessing.

These state-of-the-art prosthetics use sensors and motors that respond to the wearer’s movements.

Rabbi Ariel determined that halachically, such a limb is considered part of the body itself.

This classification carries significant spiritual weight — it means that an observant Jew who has lost a limb can still perform commandments exactly as before, without needing special adaptations or exceptions.

The ruling also addresses practical concerns for daily and Shabbat observance. Rabbi Ariel states that using a bionic limb on Shabbat is permissible, as it does not involve directly completing an electrical circuit, but rather operates indirectly through sensors.

Even rebooting or reassembling the limb after sleep is allowed, since it meets a basic human need.

The decision appears in a special “Swords of Iron War” section of Tehumin, devoted to halachic issues that have arisen during the current conflict — from identifying fallen soldiers to navigating new medical realities.

The Zomet Institute of Halacha and Technology, which publishes Tehumin, called the ruling “a milestone” in adapting Jewish law to modern technology, ensuring that those who have sacrificed in war or suffered terror attacks can continue serving God with dignity and wholeness.
