A man who broke into the Philadelphia home of an Orthodox Jewish woman early Monday was fatally shot by a neighbor who responded after hearing screams coming from the residence, according to reports by Yeshiva World News and Philadelphia’s local ABC affiliate.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. in the Rhawnhurst section of the city.

According to the reports, the woman, an Orthodox Jewish babysitter who cares for infants, was inside the home with her two children when the intruder entered the residence.

A neighbor who heard the woman screaming reportedly forced open the door using a crowbar in an attempt to intervene.

Philadelphia’s ABC affiliate reported that the neighbor confronted the suspect and ordered him to drop a stick he was holding.

Authorities said the suspect refused, after which the neighbor reportedly fired one shot into the man’s chest.

The suspect was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators said the front door of the residence appeared to have been forced open. Police also said the suspect’s vehicle was found parked outside the home.

No injuries were reported among the womn, her children or any other individuals inside the residence during the incident.

As of Monday, no arrests had been announced.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and that the case is being treated as a homicide investigation, which authorities described as standard procedure in fatal shooting cases while detectives work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the break-in and shooting.

The reports did not identify either the suspect or the neighbor involved in the shooting.
