The Israel Defense Forces is preparing to expand its iPhone-only policy across a wider segment of its command structure, tightening digital security rules that were reassessed after the October 7 attack, Army Radio reported.
The move will bring many more officers under strict device controls and eliminate Android phones from all military communication channels.
For more than a decade, senior commanders at the level of colonel and above have carried only military-issued iPhones.
The policy began after the army halted the distribution of Android models, concluding that Apple’s closed operating system carried a lower risk of penetration attempts or unauthorized access.
According to the latest review, that approach will now be applied far more broadly.
The most immediate change involves rank. Restrictions that once applied only to the uppermost echelon will now take effect beginning at lieutenant colonel, adding what Army Radio described as “hundreds” of officers to the list of personnel barred from using non-Apple devices for official communication.
Those affected will be issued new equipment as the transition is phased in.
The second adjustment is more sweeping: The IDF is expected to formally prohibit the use of any military phone that is not an iPhone.
Under the emerging directive, Android devices may still be used privately, but they will be excluded altogether from encrypted operational channels, internal coordination, and any communication involving classified material.
The decision follows months of internal discussions about data exposure and lessons drawn from the breaches that allowed hostile groups to monitor troop movements and intercept sensitive information in the early stages of last year’s war.
Security officials concluded that narrowing the range of permitted devices would improve the army’s ability to manage vulnerabilities and keep all officers on a uniform platform.
Implementation is expected to begin once updated guidelines are circulated, making Apple’s iPhone the sole device allowed for military communication across the IDF’s senior and mid-level ranks.
