A Bronx woman has been charged with multiple hate crime offenses after allegedly attacking a Jewish woman aboard a New York City subway train while shouting antisemitic remarks, according to the NYPD and reporting by the New York Post.
Police identified the suspect as Diana Smith. Authorities said the incident occurred Sunday afternoon on a crowded C train in lower Manhattan and culminated in the assault of a 23-year-old Orthodox Jewish woman from the Upper West Side.
The victim, a nurse originally from Montreal, told The New York Post that the encounter began after she boarded the train at Jay Street. According to her account, Smith entered the same subway car and began making hostile comments about Jews to other passengers.
The woman said Smith first spoke to one couple about “the dangers of Jews stealing wealth” and later made additional remarks to another pair of passengers.
According to the victim, Smith then focused her attention on her.
“And then she turned towards me, like very targeted, stared me down, and smiled with this very eerie smile that I’ll never forget,” she told The Post.
The victim said she responded by asking, “So you see my reflection?” after hearing comments directed at Jews. According to her account, Smith replied, “Yeah, and I smell it on you too.”
Part of the confrontation was recorded on the victim’s cellphone. The footage captured Smith shouting, “Jews are eating kids.”
The situation later became physical. According to the victim, Smith placed a hand on her throat, while several passengers attempted to calm the situation.
The victim said Smith knocked her phone to the floor before allegedly grabbing her by the neck, kicking her and pushing her to the ground. She told The Post that her hair was pulled out during the attack and that she suffered a concussion.
When the train arrived at Canal Street, the woman exited the subway car and sought assistance from police while another passenger activated the emergency alarm.
Police subsequently arrested Smith. Court records show she faces charges of hate crime assault, hate crime criminal obstruction of breathing and aggravated harassment.
