Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is developing a new solar-based power system that could provide religious communities with a cleaner, safer way to use electricity on Shabbat.
Observant Jews avoid switching lights or appliances on and off during Shabbat, as doing so is considered a violation of Jewish law.
Many families rely on timers or special devices, while others use diesel generators to keep their homes running. Those generators are costly, noisy, and polluting.
The BGU team is working on small neighborhood microgrids that collect solar energy during the week and release it automatically over Shabbat.
Because the system does not require any human action once it is set, researchers say it could meet religious requirements while replacing generators altogether.
Dr. Tehila Kalaji, who is leading the project, said the team built the concept around the needs of religious communities and has been consulting with rabbis throughout the process.
The goal, she said, is to create a solution that supports traditional Shabbat practices while helping reduce pollution.
The microgrids can be designed for individual homes, apartment buildings, or whole neighborhoods.
If adopted widely, the technology could cut energy costs and improve air quality in areas that currently depend on diesel fuel.
Researchers say the idea could also be used in Jewish communities overseas that are looking for environmentally friendly ways to observe Shabbat without giving up modern conveniences.
Kalaji said the project reflects Israel’s efforts to match innovation with the everyday needs of different communities, helping them stay true to their beliefs while benefiting from clean energy.
