At least nine people were killed and dozens wounded after an Iranian ballistic missile struck a residential area in Beit Shemesh on Sunday afternoon, as Iran launched multiple waves of missiles toward Israel.
Air raid sirens sounded across large parts of the country, sending millions of Israelis rushing to protected spaces during the barrage. One missile directly hit a neighborhood in Beit Shemesh, west of Jerusalem, causing extensive destruction and collapsing several structures, including a fortified shelter and multiple private homes.
Large rescue forces from Magen David Adom, ZAKA, United Hatzalah, and Israel Fire and Rescue Services rushed to the scene, combing through debris in an urgent search for survivors feared trapped beneath the rubble.
“When we arrived, we encountered heavy destruction and residents who had already been pulled from damaged buildings,” said MDA medic Yosef Laufer.
“We treated multiple casualties at the scene, including a girl around 10 years old who was critically injured, along with others suffering injuries of varying severity. Teams are continuing searches and medical treatment as additional victims are located.”
Initial assessments indicated at least three dozen people were hurt in the strike, several of them in critical condition. Emergency responders later confirmed that at least nine of the most severely wounded victims succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
The IDF said Home Front Command search-and-rescue units, supported by numerous medical teams and evacuation helicopters, remain active at the impact site. The commander of the Home Front Command is en route to oversee ongoing rescue operations.
Medical officials reported that among those treated, several remain in serious or moderate condition, while many others sustained lighter injuries.
In a separate impact elsewhere in central Israel during the same barrage, a man in his 50s was moderately wounded by shrapnel.
Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities warn that casualty figures may continue to change while searches continue.
