An Israeli health tech company and a U.S. medical distributor are partnering to make rapid diabetic eye screenings available in pharmacies and other community healthcare locations across the United States.
AEYE Health, which develops artificial intelligence tools for retinal diagnostics, has joined with Ford Medical, a distributor that works with non-hospital care providers.
Their initiative will roll out AEYE-DS, an FDA-cleared autonomous AI system that works with a portable retinal camera to detect diabetic retinopathy—one of the leading causes of vision loss among working-age adults.
The system produces results within minutes without the need for an eye specialist or dilating a patient’s pupils.
It operates under an existing medical billing code, allowing the screenings to be integrated into routine care at pharmacies, urgent care centers, and clinics.
Diabetic retinopathy can often be prevented if diagnosed early, but many patients miss the annual eye exams recommended by doctors.
By bringing the technology to pharmacies—where people may visit more frequently than eye clinics—AEYE and Ford Medical hope to make testing more accessible and reduce the number of undiagnosed cases.
The process requires only one image of each eye, making it quick and non-invasive. Both companies say this could help detect disease earlier and prevent avoidable blindness.
