Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) released a statement Monday saying it would launch a “devastating and powerful missile attack” against Al Udeid, America’s largest military installation in the region, located in Qatar.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council announced that the number of missiles it was sending was equal to the number of bombs the US used when it attacked Iran’s three main nuclear sites on Saturday. Some experts interpreted the announcement as a signal that Iran intended to de-escalate.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said it had “thwarted the attack and successfully intercepted the Iranian missiles,” with no reported injuries.
Iran emphasized that the attack was intended to target only US military personnel and that the base was located far from civilian areas.
“The base that was targeted in the attack by the powerful Iranian forces was far from urban facilities and residential areas in Qatar,.” Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“This action did not pose any threat to our friendly and brotherly country, Qatar, and its noble people,” it added.
US military bases in the Middle East were bracing for a retaliation for the US strike on Saturday night that severely damaged Iran’s nuclear facilities. Many of the personnel and aircraft were evacuated from Al Udeid, and Qatar announced it was closing its airspace before the attack.
Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates closed their airspace after the attack.
While reporting the attack, Iranian state television played military music, saying it was “a mighty and successful response” to “America’s aggression.”
In a speech following the US attack on Iran’s nuclear sites, President Donald Trump warned Iran that retaliation “will be met with force far greater than what was witnessed.”
Iran continued launching missiles into Israel on Monday, with a prolonged attack that caused power outages in the south.
