As Israel marked its 78th Independence Day, the President’s Residence in Jerusalem hosted a ceremony honoring 120 outstanding soldiers and officers, even as fighting continued across multiple fronts.
At the event, President Isaac Herzog awarded certificates and pins to the honorees, selected for their excellence, dedication, professionalism, and sense of responsibility.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, along with senior military officials and the soldiers’ families.
In his remarks, Zamir underscored the complexity of celebrating independence while the country remains at war.
“These are very complex days for celebration,” he said. “At this very hour, as we honor you, our forces are deployed across all fronts, risking their lives with endless dedication in the mission of security.”
He emphasized that Israeli forces are actively engaged in multiple arenas, and that the military remains on constant alert.
“At this moment we are engaged in intense fighting,” he said. “The IDF maintains a high level of preparedness and is ready to return immediately and powerfully to combat in all sectors.”
Zamir described the honorees as a reflection of the broader Israeli society and its commitment to national defense.
“The 120 outstanding soldiers standing here represent those who sow and those who reap for our entire country,” he said. “They work day and night for Israel’s security, ensuring the continuity of life and the safety of all its citizens.”
He pointed to the diversity among the soldiers, calling them “a remarkable human mosaic” drawn from across the country and around the world.
“Our outstanding soldiers come from every corner of this country and from across the globe,” he said. “New immigrants who chose to tie their fate to this people and this land, and lone soldiers who have made all of us one big family.”
Despite the celebratory nature of Independence Day, Zamir made clear that the reality of ongoing conflict remains at the forefront.
“Behind the achievements stand faces and names,” he said. “Some are here today, and others pass by you in the street, and you may never know how deep their sacrifice and dedication have been for all of us, for a life of growth and prosperity here in the State of Israel, and for the eternity of Israel.”
The ceremony reflected both the pride of a nation marking 78 years of independence and the continued burden of defending it, as Israeli forces remain engaged in an ongoing and multifront war.
