A Georgia Democratic candidate for the state Senate faced criticism over the weekend after a Passover ad published in the Atlanta Jewish Times featured challah. Although challah is traditional for regular Sabbath meals, leavened bread is forbidden during the week of Passover and substituted with matzoh.
The ad, featuring Nathalie Kanani, who is running for Georgia State Senate District 14, appeared in the Times‘ Passover edition, which included a range of holiday-related greetings and community content.
The image drew attention after Atlanta Journal-Constitution political reporter Greg Bluestein highlighted it on X, writing that the ad “features challah.” “It’s the thought that counts, I guess,” he added.
The post circulated widely across political and Jewish social media, prompting reactions from public figures.
Georgia state Rep. Esther Panitch criticized the error and noted that, as the only Jewish member of the Georgia General Assembly, she was available to advise on content intended for Jewish holidays.
Commentary aggregated by Raw Story included a remark by Jonah Goldberg, who compared the image to serving a “Yom Kippur BLT sandwich.”
Kanani said in a statement posted to X that the inclusion of challah was an oversight and accepted responsibility for the mistake, even though she noted the content had been produced by a consultant working with her campaign.
“My intent was to honor my Jewish neighbors and friends. We are all human, and even with the best of intentions, mistakes can happen. I believe in meeting those moments with grace and using them to bring people from different cultures together, not tear them apart,” she wrote.
Kanani has said her campaign is focused on issues such as affordability, healthcare, housing, education, and workers’ rights. In a LinkedIn post last month, she announced that she had formally qualified to run for the seat.
