“Next month, God willing, I will return to Israel. I will once again put on the IDF uniform, and I will proudly serve alongside my brothers.”

In a moment symbolizing resilience and national pride, former Hamas hostage Edan Alexander was promoted to sergeant first class by the IDF on Wednesday, less than six months after returning home to Israel.
Alexander, 21, served in the Golani Brigade and was abducted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists stormed his post near the border community of Nahal Oz.
The New Jersey native and lone soldier spent 584 days in captivity before his release in May, following diplomatic efforts that included intervention by the Trump administration.
Since regaining his freedom, Alexander has repeatedly expressed his determination to resume his military service.
At a Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) gala in New York last month, he told attendees: “Serving in the IDF is one of the greatest honors of my life. Next month, God willing, I will return to Israel. I will once again put on the IDF uniform, and I will proudly serve alongside my brothers.”
He also paid tribute to those who continue to serve and sacrifice for Israel, adding: “To the soldiers who continue to defend Israel, and to the families of the fallen — I carry your sacrifice with me always.”
Born and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, Alexander moved to Israel to enlist as a lone soldier, motivated by a strong sense of duty. His decision to return to service has drawn widespread admiration, seen as a powerful symbol of resilience and unwavering commitment to Israel’s defense.
Maj. Gen. Kalifa praised Alexander’s courage and perseverance, calling him “an inspiration to all soldiers who wear the uniform and to those who stand behind them.”
