Cient\u00edficos de la Universidad Ben-Guri\u00f3n del N\u00e9guev, en Israel, realizaron un descubrimiento potencialmente revolucionario sobre la funci\u00f3n biol\u00f3gica de un p\u00e9ptido anticanceroso como inhibidor de la prote\u00edna quinasa.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Los p\u00e9ptidos son cadenas cortas de amino\u00e1cidos unidas por enlaces pept\u00eddicos. Las mol\u00e9culas largas formadas por unidades pept\u00eddicas son lo que conocemos como prote\u00ednas, y las prote\u00ednas quinasas son enzimas que pueden cambiar la funci\u00f3n de una prote\u00edna. El descubrimiento de los investigadores, centrado en un p\u00e9ptido natural de la regi\u00f3n no codificante del ARNm, podr\u00eda contribuir en gran medida a la forma de tratar el c\u00e1ncer en el futuro.<\/p>\n

El ARNm, o \u00e1cido ribonucleico mensajero, desempe\u00f1a muchas funciones clave en la biolog\u00eda humana, incluida la codificaci\u00f3n de prote\u00ednas que tienen diferentes funciones. Alrededor del 40% del ARNm de una regi\u00f3n concreta contiene secuencias que codifican p\u00e9ptidos cortos, aunque hasta hace poco los cient\u00edficos cre\u00edan que la regi\u00f3n era lo que se conoce como \u00abno codificante\u00bb, y no sab\u00edan si los p\u00e9ptidos cortos ten\u00edan una funci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

En su investigaci\u00f3n, los cient\u00edficos pudieron aislar y confirmar que uno de los p\u00e9ptidos cortos act\u00faa como inhibidor de quinasas, lo que significa que inhibe la progresi\u00f3n del c\u00e1ncer entre las etapas de desarrollo de las c\u00e9lulas cancerosas hasta la met\u00e1stasis. Las prote\u00ednas env\u00edan se\u00f1ales a las c\u00e9lulas que les proporcionan determinadas instrucciones, y los investigadores de la BGU demostraron por primera vez que los inhibidores eran capaces de bloquear los mensajes que transmite la quinasa que indica a las c\u00e9lulas cancerosas que se dividan.<\/p>\n

\u00abDemostrar claramente el papel de este p\u00e9ptido es s\u00f3lo la punta del iceberg\u00bb, explica Etta Livneh, profesora y miembro de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad Ben Guri\u00f3n. \u00abAhora que sabemos que al menos algunos p\u00e9ptidos tienen una funci\u00f3n biol\u00f3gica, podemos empezar a descubrir las funciones de muchos m\u00e1s\u00bb.<\/p>\n
