A primera vista, la idea de que Arabia Saudita tenga un rabino jefe parece bastante rid\u00edcula. El reino del desierto es conocido como el lugar de nacimiento del Islam. Seg\u00fan el historiador Bernard Lewis, cuando el fundador del Islam, Mahoma, dijo en su lecho de muerte: \u00abQue no haya dos religiones en Arabia\u00bb, se refer\u00eda a los jud\u00edos. Eso explica la falta de sinagogas, iglesias o incluso reuniones de oraci\u00f3n organizadas abiertamente para cualquier fe no musulmana.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pero eso no impide que el rabino Jacob Herzog, nacido en Nueva York, lance su propia candidatura para convertirse en el primer rabino en la pen\u00ednsula ar\u00e1biga, posiblemente el primero en milenios que se sepa. El <\/span>Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/em> se reuni\u00f3 con Herzog, un ciudadano con doble nacionalidad estadounidense e israel\u00ed, para conocer m\u00e1s sobre sus esfuerzos de divulgaci\u00f3n y su visi\u00f3n de las sinagogas, las escuelas jud\u00edas e incluso una <\/span>mikve<\/span><\/em> (ba\u00f1o ritual). El AGJC est\u00e1 supervisando kashrut y organizando <\/span>battei din<\/span><\/em> (tribunales rab\u00ednicos) para adjudicar disputas civiles y resolver problemas de estado personal y ritual.<\/span><\/p>\n

Los servicios de oraci\u00f3n jud\u00edos ahora se llevan a cabo en <\/span>Bahrein<\/span><\/a> , y la comida kosher se est\u00e1 volviendo ampliamente disponible en los <\/span>Emiratos \u00c1rabes Unidos<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Los saud\u00edes est\u00e1n construyendo una nueva ciudad de alta tecnolog\u00eda, Neom, en el Mar Rojo, frente a Egipto.
