El movimiento s\u00edsmico alcanz\u00f3 4.2 puntos en la escala de Richter. No se registraron heridos ni da\u00f1os materiales.<\/p>\n

El Instituto Geol\u00f3gica de Israel ubic\u00f3 el epicentro del se\u00edsmo a 68 kil\u00f3metros al norte de Eilat. La oficina gubernamental indic\u00f3 que los efectos m\u00e1s fuertes del fen\u00f3meno se registraron en Beer Sheva, Yeruham y el desierto de Arav\u00e1.<\/p>\n

Israel est\u00e1 situado sobre la falla Sirio-Africana, que corre a lo largo de la frontera que separa al Estado jud\u00edo de Jordania, y que a su vez forma parte del Gran Valle del Rift, una enorme fractura que se extiende desde Siria a Mozambique.<\/p>\n

El \u00faltimo gran terremoto en la zona tuvo lugar en 1927, alcanz\u00f3 una magnitud de 6.2 en la escala de Richter y provoc\u00f3 la muerte de 500 personas y heridas a otras 700.<\/p>\n

Un informe publicado en diciembre pasado por investigadores de la Universidad de Tel Aviv sugiere que un gran terremoto podr\u00eda ocurrir en la zona en los pr\u00f3ximos a\u00f1os. El estudio indica que en promedio cada 130 o 150 a\u00f1os se registra un terremoto, aunque a veces el espacio de tiempo entre un gran movimiento s\u00edsmico y otro puede ser de apenas d\u00e9cadas.<\/p>\n

Los investigadores estiman que un terremoto de magnitud 6.5 en la escala de Richter podr\u00eda destruir los edificios d\u00e9bilmente construidos y provocar un grave da\u00f1o con numerosas v\u00edctimas fatales en el pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n
