No tengo buena memoria, pero recuerdo muy bien aquel verano de 1993 porque ingres\u00e9 en el hospital con un infarto. La operaci\u00f3n se posterg\u00f3 hasta los primeros d\u00edas de septiembre y el 13 recib\u00ed el alta.<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n

Esa noche los noticieros de todo el mundo abrieron con la imagen hist\u00f3rica de Rabin y Arafat estrech\u00e1ndose sonrientemente las manos, y detr\u00e1s Clinton abraz\u00e1ndolos. Ese d\u00eda Peres y Abb\u00e1s firmaron los conocidos como Acuerdos de Oslo, culminando un proceso diplom\u00e1tico que se hizo visible por primera vez en la Conferencia de Madrid de 1991. Conservo la memoria exacta de la extra\u00f1a sensaci\u00f3n de ver c\u00f3mo el enemigo p\u00fablico n\u00famero uno se convert\u00eda en un instante en un aliado para la paz. Quiz\u00e1s, como hab\u00eda escrito el a\u00f1o anterior Francis Fukuyama, hab\u00eda llegado el fin de la historia, aunque no pude evitar el pensamiento de que aquello no era m\u00e1s que una alucinaci\u00f3n a causa de la anestesia y que a\u00fan segu\u00eda en el quir\u00f3fano, quiz\u00e1s al inicio del camino hacia el t\u00fanel con brillante luz a la salida del que tantos hablan.<\/p>\n

Septiembre ha resultado ser un buen mes para cerrar acuerdos de paz con Israel, pero que acarrean posoperatorios traum\u00e1ticos. En una foto similar a la de hace 25 a\u00f1os, un 17 de septiembre de 1978 (har\u00e1n pronto 40) se hac\u00edan otro retrato hist\u00f3rico impensable Begin y Sadat, apadrinados en aquella ocasi\u00f3n por el presidente estadounidense Carter, en lo que se denomin\u00f3 Acuerdo de Camp David, que sellaba el primer tratado de paz de Israel con un pa\u00eds \u00e1rabe (en realidad, el m\u00e1s importante por poblaci\u00f3n, poder\u00edo b\u00e9lico y vecindad). Tres a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, el presidente egipcio era asesinado por alguien de su pueblo. Rabin sufri\u00f3 el mismo destino tan s\u00f3lo dos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s de su respectiva foto.<\/p>\n

El tren hacia la paz descarril\u00f3 con el magnicidio. En julio del 2000 Clinton volvi\u00f3 a convocar una cumbre en Camp David entre Arafat y el entonces jefe de gobierno israel\u00ed, Ehud Barak, pero esta vez la delegaci\u00f3n palestina no s\u00f3lo no acept\u00f3 ning\u00fan plan, sino que no formul\u00f3 ninguna contraoferta, certificando la muerte de lo pactado en Oslo. Meses despu\u00e9s lanzaban una terrible ofensiva terrorista, conocida como Segunda Intifada, dirigida a sembrar el p\u00e1nico entre los civiles israel\u00edes (ataques en autobuses, cafeter\u00edas, etc.). Esta ola estuvo dirigida por el propio partido gobernante Fatah, a diferencia de la revuelta espont\u00e1nea de 1987 (la Primera Intifada), que fue lo que oblig\u00f3 a la organizaci\u00f3n terrorista OLP a \u201cdejar las armas\u201d y el exilio tunecino e iniciar contactos diplom\u00e1ticos secretos en Noruega para ponerse al frente de una naci\u00f3n que se hab\u00eda sublevado al margen de su liderazgo.<\/p>\n

El resto m\u00e1s que el fin de la historia ha sido una historia sin fin de decepciones. Result\u00f3 que no era yo el que hab\u00eda muerto hace 25 a\u00f1os, sino la esperanza teatralizada entonces.<\/p>\n
