Nunca antes las 67 palabras de una carta fueron tan medidas y revisadas. Nunca antes un pa\u00eds (el gobierno de la democracia m\u00e1s antigua del mundo) \u201ccontemplaba con benepl\u00e1cito\u201d el \u201cestablecimiento de un hogar nacional para el pueblo jud\u00edo\u201d (para todo el pueblo jud\u00edo, no s\u00f3lo para los s\u00fabditos de su imperio), un santuario de protecci\u00f3n ante el flagrante antisemitismo que se apoderaba de Europa (despu\u00e9s del Affaire Dreyfuss en Francia, los pogromos en el Imperio Zarista, los partidos declaradamente jude\u00f3fobos del Imperio Austro-H\u00fangaro) y en el \u00fanico lugar que los propios jud\u00edos aceptar\u00edan como refugio: su cuna hist\u00f3rica, la tierra de Israel. Gracias.<\/p>\n

Algunos apuntan que la decisi\u00f3n de tal declaraci\u00f3n, emitida por el ministro de exteriores Arthur Balfour a trav\u00e9s de una breve misiva al l\u00edder de la comunidad jud\u00eda local, respond\u00eda a los intereses de los brit\u00e1nicos, inmersos en la Gran Guerra.<\/p>\n

Sin embargo, el paso m\u00e1s determinante para la victoria b\u00e9lica ya se hab\u00eda conseguido con la entrada de EE.UU. y los movimientos revolucionarios que hab\u00edan descabezado al zar en Rusia. El gesto de restituci\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica iba m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de cualquier compensaci\u00f3n por los servicios prestados al ej\u00e9rcito de Su Majestad por el qu\u00edmico Chaim Weizmann e incluso pod\u00eda poner en entredicho alguna de las promesas del oficial T.E. Lawrence a los rebeldes que instru\u00eda para que heredasen una Gran Arabia que abarcar\u00eda todo el Oriente Pr\u00f3ximo. Tampoco respetaba lo acordado secretamente con Francia como bot\u00edn al final de la contienda, que dejaba el \u00e1rea del antiguo reino cruzado de Jerusal\u00e9n bajo control internacional. En realidad, Inglaterra no ganaba con ello m\u00e1s que nuestra eterna gratitud.<\/p>\n

Porque, a pesar de los malabarismos ling\u00fc\u00edsticos para evitar hablar de soberan\u00eda o estado, del compromiso de \u201cno perjudicar los derechos civiles y religiosos de las comunidades no jud\u00edas existentes en Palestina\u201d, el documento rubricaba moralmente nuestro derecho como pueblo y naci\u00f3n. Aunque s\u00f3lo era un escueto y escurridizo gesto, nunca antes nadie desde el rey persa Ciro al derrotar a los babilonios en el siglo VI a.e.c. nos hab\u00eda abierto la puerta del retorno a la tierra ancestral, meses antes incluso de ser militarmente conquistada.<\/p>\n

Y, a pesar de lo que pas\u00f3 despu\u00e9s (el desgaje de la mayor parte del territorio para la creaci\u00f3n de Transjordania, la inacci\u00f3n ante los ataques a los jud\u00edos establecidos por los seguidores del l\u00edder \u00e1rabe pro-nazi, la promulgaci\u00f3n de un Libro Blanco que limitaba mucho el cupo de inmigraci\u00f3n en plena eclosi\u00f3n del nazismo, las detenciones de los grupos de autodefensa jud\u00eda, etc.), preferimos recordar y agradecer por lo que s\u00ed nos dieron. Una esperanza que volvimos a llamar Israel.<\/p>\n
