Como explicamos ayer, el proceso de asimilaci\u00f3n a la cultura hel\u00e9nica comenz\u00f3 una generaci\u00f3n despu\u00e9s de la muerte de Alejandro Magno (323 aec).<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Su imperio fue dividido entre sus tres generales y all\u00ed comenz\u00f3 la helenizaci\u00f3n, es decir, el movimiento para que todos los pueblos conquistados por los griegos abrazaran la cultura y religi\u00f3n griega. Los griegos introdujeron sus creencias y valores en todo el mundo civilizado sin resistencia ni problema alguno: las pr\u00e1cticas paganas promiscuas, la idolatr\u00eda, la idealizaci\u00f3n de la belleza exterior y la industria del entretenimiento. Todos estos nuevos \u00abvalores\u00bb fueron adoptados r\u00e1pidamente y con mucho entusiasmo por todos los pueblos del imperio griego. Con excepci\u00f3n del pueblo jud\u00edo.<\/p>\n

Al principio los griegos trataron de asimilar a los Yehudim por medios no violentos. Para eso se concentraron en las personas m\u00e1s vulnerable de la sociedad: los ricos. Que eran aquellos que ten\u00edan m\u00e1s para perder. Los griegos amenazaron a los ricos con confiscar toda su fortuna si persist\u00edan en la pr\u00e1ctica jud\u00eda. Y tambi\u00e9n los tentaron ofreci\u00e9ndoles la reducci\u00f3n de impuestos y la obtenci\u00f3n de t\u00edtulos aristocr\u00e1ticas si empezaban a actuar completamente como griegos. Lentamente muchos jud\u00edos influyentes se asimilaron. Esta situaci\u00f3n lleg\u00f3 a su pico cuando durante un Shabbat, Jas\u00f3n, un Cohen Gadol totalmente asimilado a la cultura hel\u00e9nica, asisti\u00f3 a una competencia deportiva en un estadio ol\u00edmpico construido al lado del Bet haMiqdash, en lugar de dirigir los servicios religiosos en el Gran Templo (Bet haMiqdash).<\/p>\n

No obstante, y aunque eran muchos los jud\u00edos que segu\u00edan el camino de los griegos, otros Yehudim permanec\u00edan leales a su fe.<\/p>\n

En el a\u00f1o 169 aec ocurri\u00f3 un hecho que cambiar\u00eda el curso de la historia. Antiojus Epifanes, el nuevo emperador, decidi\u00f3 que ya era hora de dejar de ser buenos y persuasivos con aquellos obstinados jud\u00edos que a\u00fan permanec\u00edan fieles a su religi\u00f3n. Hab\u00eda llegado el momento de imponer los valores griegos por la fuerza y eliminar la obstinada resistencia jud\u00eda. Antiojus trajo sus ej\u00e9rcitos a Yerushalayim. En primer lugar prohibi\u00f3 a los Yehudim ofrecer los sacrificios diarios en el Bet haMiqdash. Luego, profan\u00f3 nuestro Bet haMiqdash (Templo), lo transform\u00f3 en un santuario para sus \u00eddolos e introdujo sus estatuas. Mat\u00f3 a miles de jud\u00edos que se resist\u00edan y a otros los captur\u00f3 y los vendi\u00f3 como esclavos.<\/p>\n

En el a\u00f1o 167 aec Antiojus decret\u00f3 que practicar el juda\u00edsmo era considerado un crimen capital en el Imperio griego y ser\u00eda castigado con la ejecuci\u00f3n. Shabbat, Rosh Jodesh, Kashrut y en particular, la circuncisi\u00f3n fueron prohibidos. Y los jud\u00edos estaban obligados a arrodillarse en p\u00fablico cada vez que pasaban frente a un \u00eddolo griego.<\/p>\n

Al principio, los Yehudim no reaccionaron. Y miles escogieron la muerte antes que adorar \u00eddolos. Hasta que alguien decidi\u00f3 hacer algo al respecto…<\/p>\n

En una de sus redadas los griegos entraron en la ciudad de Modi’in y le ordenaron a Matitiyahu HaCohen, el l\u00edder de la ciudad, ofrecer un sacrificio a un \u00eddolo pagano. Los griegos especulaban con que una vez que el l\u00edder ofreciera un sacrificio al dios griego todos los dem\u00e1s iban a seguir su ejemplo. Y si el l\u00edder se negaba a ofrecer los sacrificios paganos, lo matar\u00edan y pondr\u00edan a un l\u00edder jud\u00edo Helenista en su lugar. As\u00ed lo hab\u00edan hecho ciudad por ciudad. Y los jud\u00edos, por lo general, se dejaban matar en lugar de adorar a los \u00eddolos. Pero con Matitiyahu ocurri\u00f3 algo diferente. En lugar del martirio (= dejarse matar para no practicar la idolatr\u00eda) Matitiyahu luch\u00f3 y termin\u00f3 matando a los que tra\u00edan las \u00f3rdenes de Antiojus. Este acto heroico, y hasta ese entonces sin precedentes, inspir\u00f3 la revoluci\u00f3n armada de los Yehudim, liderada por Matitiyahu y sus hijos, contra el tirano Antiojus. Con la ayuda de HaShem, y despu\u00e9s de muchas heroicas y dif\u00edciles batallas, los Yehudim derrotaron al poderos\u00edsimo ej\u00e9rcito griego, y al final, en el a\u00f1o 165 aec, purificaron y rededicaron el Bet haMiqdash y restauraron la soberan\u00eda jud\u00eda sobre la tierra de Israel.<\/p>\n

El rabino Eliezer Melamed (Penin\u00e9 Halaj\u00e1, Zemanim, 218-220) dice que la impaciencia de Antiojus fue algo \u00abprovidencial\u00bb (\u05de\u05df \u05d4\u05e9\u05de\u05d9\u05dd) que ayud\u00f3 a que muchos jud\u00edos resolvieran preservar su religi\u00f3n. Dice el Rab Melamed que si los griegos hubieran sido m\u00e1s pacientes, la asimilaci\u00f3n podr\u00eda haber sido mucho mayor, y las consecuencias, \u05d7\u00bb\u05d5 podr\u00edan haber sido devastadoras. Como ocurri\u00f3 muchas veces, al prohibir la pr\u00e1ctica del juda\u00edsmo, incluso los jud\u00edos m\u00e1s asimilados reaccionaron y se sumaron a la rebeli\u00f3n.<\/p>\n
