La presidenta de la comunidad destac\u00f3 en su anuncio que Lucy Saul era una persona muy querida por todos. \u201cTodo el mundo la conoc\u00eda y sab\u00eda de su inter\u00e9s y amor por todo lo relacionado con el cine\u201d, escribi\u00f3 Haroun. \u201cElla estaba decidida a asistir a todos los festivales, y exhibiciones de artes visuales\u201d, agreg\u00f3 y destac\u00f3 su \u201cinsaciable apetito por aprender\u201d y el hecho de que Lucy Saul hablaba \u00e1rabe, ingl\u00e9s, franc\u00e9s e italiano con fluidez.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

De acuerdo con el diario \u201cEgyptIndependent\u201d, que difundi\u00f3 la noticia, los jud\u00edos en Egipto, que alguna vez formaban una pr\u00f3spera comunidad de 80.000 miembros, han quedado reducidos con el paso de los a\u00f1os a s\u00f3lo un pu\u00f1ado de mujeres de edad avanzada.<\/p>\n

Si bien no hay cifras oficiales sobre el n\u00famero de jud\u00edos que viven actualmente en Egipto, en una entrevista con el programa de entrevistas de CBC, \u201cSahibet al-Saada\u201d, en septiembre de 2014, Magda Haroun dijo que el n\u00famero de miembros de la comunidad en ese momento era de 13.<\/p>\n

Grandes sectores de la comunidad abandonaron Egipto en los a\u00f1os posteriores a la ca\u00edda de la monarqu\u00eda, cuando el pa\u00eds entr\u00f3 en una serie de guerras con Israel y el presidente GamelAbdelNasser comenz\u00f3 una pol\u00edtica de expulsi\u00f3n. Seg\u00fan el el New York Times, hacia el final de la guerra de octubre de 1973, la comunidad se hab\u00eda reducido a s\u00f3lo un par de cientos de personas.<\/p>\n

La comunidad ha luchado con tenacidad durante a\u00f1os para defender los restos de la rica herencia jud\u00eda de Egipto. Seg\u00fan \u201cEgyptIndependent\u201d, \u201caunque la comunidad se ha reducido en n\u00famero y aumentado en edad, ha demostrado ser una fuerza a tener en cuenta en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os\u201d.<\/p>\n

La \u00faltima presidente del Consejo de la Comunidad jud\u00eda de El Cairo, Carmen Weinstein, logr\u00f3 que fueran restaurados muchos emblem\u00e1ticos monumentos judeo-egipcios y se defendi\u00f3 con \u00e9xito de los intentos de un grupo jud\u00edo norteamericano respaldado por el Congreso para transferir una serie de objetos a los Estados Unidos durante la d\u00e9cada de 1990.<\/p>\n

A\u00fan con todo en contra, explica el diario local, la comunidad \u201csigue manteniendo su legado, como orgullosos representantes de la historia jud\u00eda egipcia\u201d.<\/p>\n
