Elbit’s JUPITER Space Camera Launched on SpaceX Rocket for Earth Observation

The launch is a significant step in providing governments and research bodies with clearer, more detailed pictures of Earth than ever before.

Elbit Systems said Tuesday that its advanced JUPITER space camera has successfully entered orbit aboard the National Advanced Optical System (NAOS) satellite, launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base.

The Israeli defense technology company described JUPITER as one of the most sophisticated cameras of its kind, designed to serve a wide range of missions, including military operations, environmental monitoring, and scientific research. The satellite carrying the system was built by OHB Italia S.p.A.

JUPITER combines a large aperture with a lightweight design, allowing it to capture sharp, detailed images of Earth.

It is equipped with several imaging modes: a high-resolution black-and-white channel for fine detail, true-color imaging through red, green, and blue channels, and a near-infrared capability that can assess vegetation health, water levels, and other natural features.

The camera can also record long, continuous image strips, giving it the ability to cover large areas during a single orbit.

Elbit highlighted that JUPITER’s data can be processed both on the satellite and at ground stations, with advanced image-processing and artificial intelligence tools enabling faster and more precise analysis.

Alongside the camera itself, Elbit developed algorithms to enhance the ground segment of the NAOS mission, improving the way data is interpreted and used.

Company officials said the project reflects close cooperation between OHB Italia and Elbit Systems, bringing together satellite engineering and imaging expertise.
