Israeli authorities and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder are urging the public to refrain from using fireworks and firecrackers ahead of the Purim holiday, warning that the explosions are triggering panic attacks, flashbacks and hospitalizations among combat veterans across the country.

The Defense Ministry this week launched a public awareness campaign titled “Every firecracker sends me back to war,” as police intensified enforcement against the sale and use of dangerous toys in the run-up to the holiday.

The ministry said about 31,000 wounded IDF veterans and security personnel cope with mental distress and PTSD.

Get Help Israel warned in a Facebook post that the use of firecrackers not only endangers children but also causes severe emotional harm to soldiers, reservists and residents, including neighbors coping with trauma.

Parents are being urged to avoid purchasing firecrackers and other explosive toys, to speak with their children about the dangers and sensitivities involved, and to ensure they are not used, in an effort to preserve a joyful Purim while respecting the mental and emotional well-being of others.

The police said enforcement has been stepped up nationwide, with 55 proactive operations carried out in the past week and about 40 more planned before Purim, alongside roughly 500 business licensing inspections.

Importing, selling or possessing dangerous toys is a criminal offense punishable by up to one year in prison and a fine of up to 30,000 shekels.

Dr. Idit Oz, head of social services for the Defense Ministry Rehabilitation Department’s Haifa district, said explosions are a known trigger. “They had anxiety attacks as if they were in the height of battle,” she told Ynet, recalling an incident at a rehabilitation center.

The ministry said it hopes public cooperation and enforcement will allow wounded veterans to “enjoy a happy and safe Purim.”
