“He protected us and the kibbutz where he grew up and raised a family,” his wife said. “He didn’t hesitate for a moment that morning.”

The body returned to Israel overnight by Hamas has been formally identified as that of Sgt.-Major (res.) Tal Chaimi, 41, a beloved resident of Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak and head of the community’s emergency response team. Chaimi was murdered while defending his kibbutz during the Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023.
In a statement released Tuesday morning, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Israel’s National Center for Forensic Medicine had completed the identification process of the remains transferred by Hamas through the International Committee of the Red Cross.
“IDF representatives informed the family of hostage Sgt.-Major Tal Chaimi, of blessed memory, that their loved one had been returned to Israel and his identification had been completed,” the statement read. “The Government of Israel shares in the deep sorrow of the Haimi family and all the families of the deceased hostages.”
Chaimi, the grandson of Nir Yitzhak’s founding members, grew up in the kibbutz and later led its defense squad. When Hamas terrorists stormed the community on October 7, he rushed out to protect his family and neighbors. He and his comrade Lior Rudaeff were both killed in the firefight and their bodies abducted into Gaza.
Though Israeli authorities determined in December 2023 that Chaimi had been killed on the day of the attack, his body remained in Hamas’s hands until now. The family held a funeral at the time to honor his bravery and mourn his loss.
Chaimi leaves behind his wife Ela, who was pregnant when he was murdered, and their four children, along with his father and sister. In May 2024, Ela gave birth to the couple’s youngest child, ensuring that life continued even in the shadow of loss.
At his funeral, Ela spoke of her husband’s courage and devotion: “Einav, Nir and Udi, your father was killed doing what he believed in more than anything – he protected us and the kibbutz, a kibbutz where he grew up and raised a family,” she said. “He didn’t hesitate for a moment when he left the house that morning.”
Tal Chaimi’s return brings a measure of closure to his family and community, even as the pain remains raw. His story stands as a symbol of sacrifice and steadfastness — of a man who gave everything to defend his home and people, paying the ultimate price in service of Israel and the values he held most dear.
