Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that Israel will continue military operations against Iran and Hezbollah even as the United States explores the possibility of a diplomatic agreement with Tehran.
In a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Netanyahu said he spoke earlier in the day with U.S. President Donald Trump following Trump’s announcement that the United States would postpone planned strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure for several days to allow for continued talks.
“Earlier today I spoke with our friend President Trump,” Netanyahu said. “President Trump believes there is an opportunity to leverage the tremendous achievements we achieved together with the U.S. military in order to achieve the war’s objectives through an agreement, an agreement that will preserve our vital interests.”
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel’s military campaign is continuing regardless of diplomatic developments.
“At the same time, we continue to strike both in Iran and in Lebanon,” he said. “We are crushing the missile program and the nuclear program, and we continue to severely damage Hezbollah. Just a few days ago we eliminated two more nuclear scientists, and more is to come.”
He added that Israel will protect its essential security interests under any circumstances.
“We will preserve our vital interests in any situation,” Netanyahu said.
Netanyahu’s remarks came after Trump announced that the United States would postpone planned strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure following what he described as productive discussions with Iran aimed at reaching a broader agreement to end hostilities in the region.
Trump said U.S. envoys had held talks with Iranian officials and that discussions would continue, though Iranian leaders have publicly denied that negotiations are taking place and claimed the United States backed down under Iranian threats to target regional energy infrastructure.
The differing public statements from Washington and Tehran have created uncertainty about whether negotiations are actually underway. However, Netanyahu’s statement made clear that Israel intends to continue its military campaign against Iran and Hezbollah regardless of the diplomatic track.
His remarks suggest that while Israel is coordinating closely with the United States, Jerusalem is continuing its military operations and intends to ensure that Israel’s core security interests are protected, whether through military action or any future agreement.
